Details

This Japanese wooden tea tray is built for gongfu brewing, where hot water is poured over the pot. The top is slatted over a hollow base, so rinse water runs through the slats into a hidden reservoir instead of pooling on the table, and pot and cups stay off the standing water. Wood is forgiving with hot teaware, and unlike a metal tray it will not scratch a glazed cup.

On a coffee table or low side table it becomes the tea station: kettle beside it, pot and cups up on the slats, and all the wet things in one spot. It suits a home tea corner, a restaurant or a coffee bar, and in a kitchen it earns its keep under a pour over coffee setup: cone, server and mug sit on the tray, and drips from swapping cups land on wood, not the counter. Plain wood suits ceramic teapots, stoneware cups and a linen runner.

Wood throughout, slatted top over the reservoir base. Tip out the reservoir after each session; water left in it overnight is the thing to avoid. Wipe the slats and base dry and let it air dry fully before shelving it. No soaking, no dishwasher, and no spot by a radiator, where heat can dry and split wood.

Why it earns its place

Slatted top

Pour over the pot the way gongfu brewing asks for, and the water runs through the slats instead of sitting on the table.

Hidden reservoir

Water collects in the base underneath, out of sight while you brew. Tip it out at the end of the session.

Doubles as a drip tray

Set a pour over cone and a mug on it and the drips from swapping cups land on the tray, not the counter.

In your home

On a coffee table or a low side table it becomes the brewing station: kettle to one side, pot and cups on the slats, everything wet kept in one spot. The plain wood sits well with ceramic pots and stoneware cups, and looks at home next to a linen runner or a bamboo scoop.

In a kitchen it earns its place under a pour over setup. Cone, server and mug all sit on the tray while you wait, and the ring left by a wet mug lands on wood you can wipe rather than on the countertop.

Materials and quality

The tray is wood, with a slatted top panel over a hollow base that acts as the reservoir. That structure is what makes it useful: the slats keep pot and cups off the standing water, and the base holds what drains through until you empty it. Wood is forgiving with hot teaware, so setting a warm pot down on it is not a worry, and it will not scratch a glazed cup the way a metal tray might.

Care and everyday use

Empty the reservoir after every session rather than leaving water to sit in it overnight. Wipe the slats and the base dry with a cloth and let the tray air dry fully before it goes back on the shelf. Do not soak it or put it in a dishwasher, and keep it away from a radiator, which can dry and split wood.

Good to know

Does the water drain away by itself?

No, it collects in the reservoir under the slats. Empty it after each session.

Can I use it for coffee instead of tea?

Yes. It works as a drip tray under a pour over cone and server, catching the drips when you swap cups.

What is it made of?

Wood, with a slatted top over the reservoir base. Wipe it dry after use rather than soaking it.
