This chamberstick candle holder is the old design for carrying a lit candle from room to room. Hook a finger through the loop and it carries level in one hand, while the wide dish under the socket catches the drips before they reach your hand. The dish is the other half of the idea: it gives the candle a stable footprint, so you can set it down on a cloth without worry.

On the nightstand or bedside table it is the candle you light to read by, and the one you carry down the hall in a power outage. On the dining table a pair at either end gives more light than a single centerpiece and moves aside when the food arrives. It is metal in a brass or black finish. Brass suits oak, walnut, cream linen and older furniture; black sits quieter against white walls, pale wood and gray. Clear wax from the dish while it is still warm, when it comes away in one piece instead of flaking. Dust with a soft dry cloth and leave polishes alone, especially on the brass. Blow the candle out before it goes on a shelf, and store it dry.
