Details

This Moroccan iron lantern is hollow, shaped like a gourd, with the pattern pierced through the body. Light a candle inside and the light comes out in the shape of the cutouts and lands on whatever stands behind it. The curve spreads the pattern in every direction rather than one flat panel, and the weight of the iron keeps it planted on a table.

In the living room it wants a side table close to a plain wall so the pattern has somewhere to land. On a summer evening it moves outside as a patio candle lantern, throwing light across the stones and plants. Two or three grouped at different heights give the best effect, and it suits a wedding table of ivory cloth and greenery.

The finish is black, white or gold. Black gives the sharpest contrast and suits white walls and dark wood; white sits with linen and rattan; gold warms a room that already has brass in it. Let it cool before you pick it up, because iron stays hot around a flame. A dry cloth takes the soot off the inside, and wax lifts easily while it is still warm. Keep it dry: bring it in from the patio when rain is forecast and never leave it out overnight.

Moroccan Iron Lantern Candle Holder, Hollow Gourd-Shaped Candlestick for Living Room, Patio and Wedding Decor, Black, White or Gold

Why it earns its place

Pierced pattern

The cut-outs are the whole point. Light a candle inside and the pattern lands on the wall, the tablecloth or the patio stones.

Gourd shape

The rounded silhouette gives it presence unlit; lit, the curve spreads the pattern out in every direction instead of one flat panel.

Black, white or gold

Black gives the sharpest contrast between lantern and light. White suits a pale room. Gold adds warmth on a wedding table.

In your home

In the living room it wants a side table close to a plain wall, so the pattern has somewhere to land. On a summer evening it moves to the patio table, where the light spreads across the stones and the plants behind it. Two or three grouped at different heights give the best effect.

Black works against white walls and with dark wood. White sits with linen and rattan. Gold suits a wedding table of ivory cloth and greenery, or a room that already has brass in it.

Materials and quality

Iron, hollow, with the pattern pierced through the body so the light comes out in the shape of the cut-outs. Iron has weight to it, which keeps a lantern this shape planted on a table and stops it rocking when someone brushes past. The finish is black, white or gold over the metal. What you get is a solid object that looks right unlit in daylight and does its real work after dark.

Care and everyday use

Let it cool before you handle it; iron holds heat around a flame. Wipe soot from the inside with a dry cloth and lift wax while it is warm. Keep it dry: iron and standing water do not mix, so bring it in from the patio when rain is forecast and never leave it out overnight in the wet.

Good to know

Does the candle go inside?

Yes. The lantern is hollow, and the pattern comes from the flame shining out through the pierced iron.

Can I use it outdoors?

On a patio on a dry evening, yes. Bring it in when it rains; iron does not like sitting wet.

Where does it look best?

Close to a wall or on a table with a plain surface behind it, so the pattern has something to land on.
