This oval wooden serving platter is one of three solid wood shapes, each sanded smooth and finished with light oil rather than lacquer, so the grain stays visible and a knife or a loaf never meets a rough edge. It is solid wood all the way through, not veneer over board, so it can be washed and oiled for years.

It lives between kitchen and dining table. The oval takes a loaf and a knife, or cheese with a few figs. The rectangle handles cold cuts or a full main course, and the small round holds one pastry with coffee or a single dessert. As a wooden cheese board or bread board it sits well next to stoneware, linen napkins and white or dark plates. Stacked on an open shelf between uses, they double as display.

Three sizes: the round at 12 cm, the oval at 23 x 10 cm, the rectangle at 25 x 18 cm, all solid wood with a light oil finish. Hand wash only and never soak it, since standing water swells wood and lifts the oil. Dry it as soon as it is washed and stand it on its edge to air. When the surface looks dry, rub in a food-safe oil. No dishwasher, and no oven.
