This up down LED wall light is an aluminum sconce that throws one cone of light up the wall and one down, leaving a dark band between, so at night a plain wall gets some structure. Rated IP65, it works outside as well as on a stairwell. Black or white, 6 W or 12 W, hardwired, with the LED built in.

Inside, run an evenly spaced row down a hallway or up a staircase wall so the cones align. In a bedroom, one on each side of the bed washes the wall softly enough to read by, no nightstand lamp needed. The same fitting can carry on outside as a porch light. Black on white stucco or pale paint gives the crispest shape; white on a white wall leaves only the light showing.

Aluminum body that will not rust, acrylic shade softening each cone's edge, rated for 90-260V. Two sizes: 11.5 cm for the 6 W, for a hallway row, and 17.5 cm for the 12 W, for a stairwell or an outside wall, both in black or white. Cut the power at the breaker, then wipe the aluminum with a damp cloth and dry it, or hose it down outdoors. Water only on the acrylic; solvents cloud it. No bulb to change.

In your home

Indoors, run a row along a hallway or up a staircase wall, spacing them evenly so the cones line up. In a bedroom one either side of the bed gives a soft wash for reading without a lamp on the table. The same fitting can carry on outside to the porch and the wall by the back door.

Black on white render or pale paint gives the sharpest shape; white disappears into a white wall and leaves only the light. Both sit well with concrete, timber cladding and plain modern joinery.

Materials and quality

The body is aluminium, which does not rust and takes the IP65 rating that lets it live outdoors. The acrylic shade diffuses the integrated LED so each cone is soft-edged rather than harsh. Two sizes, 6 W at 11.5 cm and 12 W at 17.5 cm, both in black or white, both hardwired and rated for 90-260V. For the price it is a solid little block of metal, not a plastic shell.

Care and everyday use

Switch off at the breaker before cleaning. Wipe the aluminium with a damp cloth and dry it; outside, a rinse with the hose is fine given the IP65 rating. Use water only on the acrylic shade, since alcohol and solvent cleaners cloud it. The LED is integrated, so there is no bulb to change.
