Details

This wabi sabi acacia serving platter is cut with a live edge, so the outline follows the tree rather than a template and each one comes out a little different. That slight irregularity is what makes it look handmade. It is a solid slab of acacia, not veneer over board, and knife marks read as character rather than damage.

On the kitchen counter it holds the loaf, the bread knife and the butter; Sunday morning that means croissants and jam, coffee pot at the far end. At dinner the oval goes out as a bread and cheese board, the rectangle a longer run of crackers, fruit and cold cuts. Either looks right on a linen runner beside stoneware and plain glass; the irregular edge does the decorating.

It is solid acacia, hard and dense, with visible grain and varied tone, as an oval or a rectangle; with a live edge, the piece you receive will differ from the photograph. Hand wash with warm water and a soft sponge, dry it right away; no dishwasher, no soaking. Oil it now and then with a food-safe oil so it does not go dry and gray, and store it flat or on edge in a dry cabinet, away from radiators.

Wabi Sabi Acacia Serving Platter, Oval or Rectangular Solid Wood Tray for Bread, Cheese and Fruit, Kitchen Counter and Dining Table

Why it earns its place

Live edge outline

The shape follows the tree rather than a template, so no two platters come out quite the same.

Oval or rectangle

Oval suits a loaf and a wedge of cheese; rectangle takes a longer spread of crackers, fruit and cold cuts.

Slightly off by design

Each one is a little irregular, and that is what makes it look handmade next to a machine-cut board.

In your home

On the kitchen counter it sits under a loaf, the bread knife and the butter, ready for breakfast. At dinner the oval goes out with bread and cheese, the rectangle with a longer run of crackers, fruit and cold cuts. Either one looks right on a linen runner beside stoneware plates and plain glass.

The irregular edge does the decorating. Put it next to a plain white bowl and a jug of something green and the table looks considered without a centrepiece. Sunday morning it is croissants and jam on the wood and the coffee pot at the other end.

Materials and quality

Acacia is a hard, dense wood with visible grain and real variation in tone. This platter keeps a live edge, meaning the outline of the tree is left in rather than squared off, so the shape and grain of the piece you receive will differ from the photograph. What arrives is a solid slab of wood, not a veneer over board, and it takes knife marks as part of its character rather than as damage.

Care and everyday use

Hand wash with warm water and a soft sponge, then dry it right away; do not put it in the dishwasher or leave it soaking. Oil it occasionally with a food-safe oil to stop the surface going dry and grey. Store it flat or on its edge in a dry cupboard, not against a radiator.

Good to know

Will mine look like the photo?

Close, but not identical. The live edge follows the tree, so the outline and grain vary from platter to platter.

Which shape should I pick?

Oval for bread and cheese, rectangle for a longer spread across the table.

Is it solid wood?

Yes, a solid piece of acacia rather than a veneer or composite.
