Details

This waffle weave tea towel dries glasses faster than a flat weave, and the texture is the reason. The raised grid opens the cotton up, so more surface touches the glass on each pass and the water has pockets to go into. More water per square inch means a rack of glasses done sooner. At 18 x 26 inches it is a full-size towel, big enough to fold over the oven handle.

In the kitchen it hangs from the oven door or sits by the sink. Tea towel or dish towel, the job is the same: drying dishes and wiping hands. Five colors let you split the roles, white for glassware, charcoal for hands, and they stay apart. It also works as a cloth napkin. It suits wooden boards, stoneware and a white or sage kitchen; forest green and beige go with warmer rooms, charcoal and light gray with monochrome ones.

It is 100% cotton waffle weave, 18 x 26 inches or 45 x 65 cm, in white, charcoal, light gray, forest green and beige. Machine wash, then tumble or line dry. Leave out the fabric softener, which coats the fibers and clogs the pockets that do the absorbing. Cotton softens with every wash and gets more absorbent after the first couple.

Why it earns its place

Holds more water

The waffle pockets add surface area, so the towel takes up more water per pass than a flat weave and a rack of glasses gets done faster.

18 x 26 inches

Big enough to fold over the oven handle or use as a napkin, at 45 x 65 cm.

Five colors

White, charcoal, light gray, forest green and beige, so hands and dishes can each have their own towel and nobody mixes them up.

In your home

Hang one from the oven door and keep another by the sink. The color split is the practical part: white for glasses, charcoal for hands, and the two never meet. It also works as a cloth napkin on the table, which is what the waffle texture looks like it was made for.

Cotton waffle sits with wooden boards, stoneware and a white or sage kitchen. Forest green and beige suit a warmer kitchen; charcoal and light gray are for the monochrome ones. Buy two or three and the drawer starts to look like a decision rather than a pile.

Materials and quality

The towel is 100% cotton in a waffle weave, and the weave is the whole point. The raised grid opens the fabric up, so there is more cotton surface touching the glass than a flat towel manages, and the water has pockets to go into. Cotton takes a machine wash without complaint and gets softer with each one. At 18 x 26 inches, 45 x 65 cm, it is a full-size tea towel, not a hand cloth.

Care and everyday use

Machine wash. Skip the fabric softener: it coats the fibers and clogs the waffle pockets, which are what make the towel absorb in the first place. Tumble or line dry. Expect it to get more absorbent after the first couple of washes, as cotton does.

Good to know

How big is it?

18 x 26 inches, or 45 x 65 cm. A full-size tea towel that also folds down to a napkin.

Can I use fabric softener?

Leave it out: softener clogs the weave and the towel stops absorbing, so machine wash without it.

Which color for what?

Keep white for glasses and dishes and a darker one, charcoal or forest green, for hands, so the two never get mixed up.
