Walnut Wood Serving Tray, Japanese Solid Wood Plate for Dessert, Fruit and Breakfast, Round, Oval or Rectangle
Walnut's dark grain gets oil and nothing else, in three shapes for three jobs.
Details
This walnut serving tray is solid walnut finished with oil and nothing else. Without lacquer, what you touch is the wood, not a coating that turns white where it scratches and records every knife mark, and the dark chocolate grain reads as expensive on its own, so it looks right beside plain white ceramics.
The 12 cm round goes under a coffee cup with one cookie, on a desk, a nightstand or a bedside table. The narrow 23 x 10 cm oval gets used most, for some sushi, a few cheese slices, or dates lined up next to the coffee. The 20 x 13 cm rectangle is for breakfast, toast and an egg, then serves as a cheese board after dinner. Walnut looks best against white or cream ceramics and pale linen, and suits brass and dark flatware.
Solid walnut, oiled, in a round, oval or rectangle; no two plates have quite the same grain. Hand wash only, warm water, no long soak, dry right away. No dishwasher: the heat and detergent pull the oil out and can crack the wood. Once the surface turns pale, work in some food-safe oil, give it a night to soak in, then wipe off the excess. Keep it off the stovetop and out of direct sun.

Why it earns its place
Three shapes
A 12 cm round for a coffee and one biscuit, a 23 x 10 cm oval for cheese or sushi, a 20 x 13 cm rectangle for breakfast.
Walnut, oiled
No lacquer, just oil on the wood, so the dark chocolate grain shows as it is and can be re-oiled at home.
Reads as expensive
Dark walnut next to plain white ceramics looks like more money than it cost, which is the point of it.

In your home
The oval is the one that gets used most: a narrow strip for a few slices of cheese, some sushi, or a row of dates beside the coffee. The round goes under a cup with one biscuit on a desk or a bedside table. The rectangle does breakfast, toast and an egg, and doubles as a cheese board at the end of a dinner.
Walnut is at its best against plain white or cream ceramics and pale linen, where the dark grain does the work. It also suits brass and black metal, so it sits well on a table with dark cutlery.
Materials and quality
Solid walnut, finished with oil rather than a lacquer. That matters in two ways: the surface is the wood itself, not a coating that scratches white and shows every knife mark, and when it does dull after a year of use you can bring it back with a cloth and some oil. The grain is the dark chocolate brown walnut is known for, and because it is real wood the figure differs a little from plate to plate.
Care and everyday use
Hand wash only, in warm water without a long soak, and dry it at once with a cloth. No dishwasher: the heat and detergent strip the oil and can split the wood. When the surface starts to look dry or pale, rub in a little food-safe oil, leave it overnight and wipe off the excess. Keep it away from the hob and out of direct sun.
Good to know
Which shape for a cheese board?
The 23 x 10 cm oval for a small selection, or the 20 x 13 cm rectangle if you want room for crackers alongside.
Is it dishwasher safe?
No, hand wash only. The oil finish comes off in a dishwasher and the wood can warp.
Do the three shapes match in colour?
All are walnut with the same oil finish, so they sit as a set, though the grain varies from piece to piece.
